Iran Revolutionary Guards commander 'killed in Syria'

General Hussein Hamedani
A senior commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guards was killed in Syria on Thursday, Iran has said.

In a statement Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) said Gen Hussein Hamedani was killed during an advisory mission near Aleppo.
It said he was advising the Syrian army in their battle against Islamic State (IS) militants.
Iran has blamed IS for the general's death, but the exact circumstances remain unclear.
In 2009 Gen Hamedani was subject to European Union sanctions for his role in suppressing protests following the disputed Iranian presidential election.
The general is the latest of a number of Iranian commanders to be killed in Syria.
Iran has been providing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's army with military advice in its fight against rebels since the civil war broke out in 2011.
