By Chimaobi Nwaiwu
Nnewi—No fewer than three people lost their lives and five others got seriously injured when a siren blaring Hilux pick-up van with registration number, EKY 95 AE driving  along Limca Road on opposite direction by Boromeo Hospital, crashed into two tricycles, killing three and critically injuring over five people.
According to an eye-witness, the ill-fated Hilux pick-up van was  driving on a high speed with one-way traffic lights on, against traffic rules when it rammed into two tricycles, knocking one into a  gutter and the other off the road.
As at the time Vanguard source arrived the scene of the accident, a man and a woman who were critically injured and unconscious were being removed from the tricycle and taken to the hospital, with rescue operations going on while sympathizers crowded the scene, thereby causing gridlock.
Sympathizers, who thronged the scene of the accident were angrily  lamenting  the menace and the wasting of lives by siren-blaring vehicles even when the police had banned them.
It took the intervention of the officials of Willie Work Force WWF,  to clear the road for free movement of vehicles.
When contacted, the Onitsha Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Mr. Anthony Meta confirmed the accident, but stated that nobody died, adding that three men and two females sustained injuries.
He also said that the Hilux pick-up van had a flusher on top  and was driving against traffic.
“We keep warning them. I do not know who owns that vehicle. It has a private number with flusher, meaning that it belongs to an important personality, but they are lawless.
“We have been warning them. They drive so recklessly and against traffic rules, intimidating people  but they feel  they are above the law.”
