Heartless thieves steal disabled child's £2,000 wheelchair while she was on a Make-A-Wish trip to Disneyland
THIEVES have stolen a specially-adapted £2,000 buggy belonging to a four-year-old cerebral palsy sufferer who is waiting to undergo life-saving surgery.
Bailey Walters-Lawrence was in Disneyland Paris on a special trip organised by the Make-A-Wish Foundation when her family home was targeted by heartless crooks.
Devastated mum Shermel Walters-Lawrence told how she believes the thieves knew they were going to be away and that their victim was a disabled child.
She told the Evening Standard: "We were granted a wish and some family members put some money for Bailey to go to Disneyland to meet the Princesses.
"When we got back the shed had been broken into and they'd taken it.
"I was disgusted because it's evidently a wheelchair, not a high street brand buggy.
"The NHS won't give me another one, so we'll have to buy it."
Bailey is due to undergo Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital next month, after a community campaign raised the £30,000 needed to pay for the operation.
But the family, who live in Kilburn, North West London, still need to raise a further £15,000 to pay for the aftercare.
And now mum Shermel, 26, needs to add £2,000 to that bill in order to replace the Simba branded wheelchair.
A Met Police spokesman said: "Police are investigating the theft of an electric wheelchair some time between 8am on Tuesday, April 5 and 7pm on Saturday, April 9.
"An electric wheelchair was taken from outside an address in Gorefield Place, Kilburn. The Simba make chair is black and red in colour with a red seat.
"No arrests have been made and enquiries continue."
